Starting tomorrow, all bank accounts that have remained unused for over ten years—carrying no transactions, income, or expenses—will have their unclaimed balances transferred to the Savings Deposit Insurance Fund (TMSF). This initiative aims to recover and manage these dormant funds effectively, ensuring transparency and proper allocation.
Bank customers are strongly advised to verify their account statuses to prevent any inconvenience. Banks have issued warnings encouraging clients to check if their names appear on the list of accounts scheduled for transfer. The deadline for claiming these funds is set for 5:00 PM tomorrow, after which unclaimed balances will be irrevocably transferred to TMSF.
To facilitate the process, the TMSF website now features a dedicated search portal where users can look up their names and surnames to see if they hold any unclaimed balances. This service allows individuals to identify potential forgotten assets and initiate their claim process promptly.
Applicants must visit their relevant bank branches in person, bringing valid identity documents, to verify their identities and claim their deposits. It is crucial to act before the deadline to ensure the recovery of these funds, which otherwise will be managed by the TMSF.
As per existing regulations, any bank account that remains inactive for a period exceeding ten years falls under the statute of limitations, leading to its balance being transferred to TMSF. Last year alone, this process resulted in the transfer of approximately 507 million Turkish Liras from various banks to the fund.
This measure emphasizes the importance of regular account activity and diligent account management by customers, highlighting the need for periodic checks to avoid losing access to funds due to inactivity.
