OpenAI has officially unveiled the o3-pro model, an enhanced iteration of their renowned reasoning AI systems, designed to provide users with more powerful and reliable performance. This latest release marks a significant milestone as it is described by the company as the most capable AI model they have developed to date.
The o3-pro is a refined successor to the earlier announced o3 model, introduced earlier this year. Unlike conventional AI models, reasoning models excel at delivering consistent and accurate results, especially in complex subjects such as physics, mathematics, and programming. They accomplish this by methodically working through problems step-by-step, mimicking logical thought processes.
Initially, OpenAI has made the o3-pro model accessible to ChatGPT Pro and Team users starting Tuesday. Within the following week, enterprise and educational sector users will gain access. Furthermore, developers can incorporate this advanced model into their applications via OpenAI’s API platform.
The API access for o3-pro is priced at $20 per million input tokens and $80 per million output tokens. To clarify, input tokens refer to the data that users send to the model, while output tokens are the responses generated by the AI. For context, one million tokens roughly equates to approximately 750,000 words, which is slightly more than the length of the novel War and Peace.
According to detailed update notes shared by OpenAI, the o3-pro consistently outperforms the previous o3 model across a broad spectrum of fields—especially in critical areas such as scientific research, education, programming, business strategy, and content creation. Reviewers also praise the model for its clarity, comprehensiveness, strict adherence to instructions, and overall accuracy.
This new iteration comes equipped with numerous innovative features, including web browsing capabilities, file analysis tools, interaction with visual data, support for Python programming, and options for personalized responses. However, users should note that response times may be slightly longer compared to the o1-pro model. Additionally, temporary chat support has been disabled for now, with OpenAI indicating ongoing efforts to restore this functionality. Currently, o3-pro does not support generating visual content nor does it integrate with OpenAI’s Canvas workspace.
Internal testing by OpenAI reveals that o3-pro achieves exceptionally high scores in various AI comparison benchmarks. Notably, in the AIME 2024 test, which assesses advanced mathematical reasoning, o3-pro surpasses Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro model. It also demonstrates superior performance over Anthropic’s Claude 4 Opus GPQA Diamond model, a standard for evaluating doctoral-level scientific knowledge.
