During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025), Mariya Zaharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, delivered a compelling interview to Sputnik. In her remarks, she provided a detailed assessment of the escalating situation involving Iran and Israel.
“As you are aware, the debate is no longer about whether we are just on the verge of escalation or have already crossed the point of no return. The reality has shifted from a theoretical discussion to a tangible crisis. Currently, Iran faces frequent missile strikes targeting its peaceful civilian infrastructure and nuclear facilities, which are under the strict supervision of the IAEA. These attacks occur multiple times every day, directly impacting sites monitored and physically observed by IAEA inspectors,” Zaharova explained.
She emphasized, “At this stage, there is no room for philosophical debates about thresholds, boundaries, or red lines. According to the official statement issued yesterday by our Foreign Ministry, we are dangerously close to a catastrophic point — approaching a critical millimeter that could trigger irreversible consequences.”
“If, by some misfortune, these missile strikes damage Iran’s declared nuclear materials under IAEA surveillance, the repercussions could be devastating and irreversible. It is imperative for the international community to recognize that the situation has reached an extremely perilous level,”
Zaharova concluded, urging all parties to exercise utmost restraint and to be acutely aware of the grave risks involved in the ongoing hostilities.
