World Boxing Implements New Gender Verification Rule for Female Boxers

The World Boxing Federation (World Boxing) has introduced a new gender verification test requirement for athletes competing in women’s boxing events. According to the updated rule, all female category boxers must pass a gender verification test to be eligible to compete.

One of the first athletes affected by this rule is Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. The gold medalist in the women’s 66 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Khelif’s participation in the Eindhoven Box Cup has been temporarily suspended. The federation announced that Khelif was not allowed to compete due to not completing the required gender verification test.

Khelif had previously faced similar issues with the International Boxing Association (IBA). After IBA was banned from the Olympics, World Boxing implemented this new rule to ensure fair competition in women’s boxing.
