87 people were detained after the commemoration ceremony held in Beyoğlu on the 12th anniversary of the Gezi Park actions.

Following the invitation of Taksim Solidarity, the crowd gathered on Mis Street observed a one-minute moment of silence for the eight people who lost their lives during the actions. Among them were representatives of political parties, unions, and civil society organizations. The crowd read a joint statement on behalf of the group, with DİSK Istanbul Regional Representative Asalettin Arslanoğlu speaking. In his speech, he remembered Sırrı Süreyya Öncü, who passed away last month, and listed those detained due to the Travel cases:

“For the lawyer Can Atalay, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Chamber of Architects against the Gezi Park and Taksim pedestrianization project; for Tayfun Kahraman, President of the Chamber of City Planners, who is the pursuer of the same case; for Çiğdem Mater, who was sued for a screenplay of an unfilmed movie; for Mine Özerden, one of the millions of people who participated in the Travel, as a staff member of a foundation, facing 18 years of heavy imprisonment for membership in an organization; and for Osman Kavala, one of the most gentle people in the world who helped with chairs, tables, and bread during the Travel, who was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or bail—when the verdict was announced, it was the end.”

Before the commemoration, almost all streets leading to Istiklal Street were closed. Transport restrictions were imposed at Taksim and Şişhane metro stations by the Istanbul Governorship. Arslanoğlu pointed out the measures taken around Taksim and made a comparison to ‘martial law.’

During the joint statement, those who died during the Travel actions, including Berkin Elvan who was killed by police tear gas canister, were commemorated. Some participants shouted slogans like ‘The murderous state will be held accountable.’ The police announced that such slogans should not be shouted.

As the group began to disperse, police moved into action and surrounded some groups participating in the commemoration around Mis Street and Tarlabaşı. The Contemporary Lawyers Association (ÇHD) announced that 87 people participating in the show were detained. ÇHD also stated that barriers were placed to prevent the lawyers, who went to the Police Department on Vatan Street to inquire about the fate of those detained, from reaching the police station.
