According to the new report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), based in Vienna, Iran has significantly accelerated its nuclear program and currently possesses approximately 409 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% purity. Since the last three-month report published by the IAEA, the measurement has increased by about 49%. Diplomats indicate that if Iran were to enrich the amount it holds—about one-tenth of the total—to 90%, it could be enough for one nuclear weapon.
Allegation of Iran hiding activities
In a second report, IAEA Director Rafael Grossi states that the Islamic Republic of Iran has previously concealed nuclear activities and materials at three facilities from the agency. It is noted that inspections at these sites have been “obstructed,” and Iran has either not responded to questions or provided unconvincing answers. Furthermore, it is alleged that Iran has taken steps to eliminate or obscure possible traces of its activities.
Grossi had previously reported findings regarding these covert activities in earlier reports. However, in his latest report, prepared after the IAEA Board of Governors, led by the Argentine Chair, was tasked in November 2024 with preparing a more comprehensive report, the findings are clearer compared to previous ones.
The report in question could also support the case for the Security Council to intervene due to Iran’s violations of control agreements with the IAEA. Germany, the UK, and France are among the states advocating for new sanctions within the United Nations framework in this context. Since April, the US has been negotiating a new nuclear agreement with Iran.
Tehran’s arguments are rejected
The US and the EU assert that Iran can develop nuclear weapons and demand significant restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program. Tehran emphasizes that it has no such intention and reiterates that its nuclear program and uranium enrichment are for peaceful purposes.
In 2018, during his first term, Trump unilaterally withdrew from the Vienna nuclear deal, which aimed to limit Iran’s nuclear program and lift sanctions in return. Subsequently, it was observed that Tehran also did not comply with the agreement.
Reaction from Israel
Shortly after the publication of the reports reported by the Reuters news agency, statements were made from the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the issue. It was claimed that the report indicates Iran’s nuclear program is not for peaceful purposes, and it was stated, “Iran is determined to produce nuclear weapons. The international community must now act and stop Iran.”
Recently, criticisms have increased within the international community regarding Israel’s Gaza policies, alleging violations of international humanitarian law, with calls for reviewing military support and partnership agreements with the EU.
Germany, which has historically supported Israel due to its genocide against Jews, has shown a shift in stance, with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announcing that arms sales to Israel would be reconsidered. Meanwhile, attention was also drawn to Israel’s right to self-defense against Iran and Houthi rebels, with a note that arms sales will be carefully examined.
