CHP’s weekly rallies called “Standing Up for the Will of the Nation,” held in different provinces of Turkey to demand freedom for Cumhurbaşkanı candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is imprisoned in Silivri, were held this week in Düzce.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, speaking at the rally, said, “Those who fear Ekrem İmamoğlu’s victory at the ballot box have tarnished our democracy’s history. They attempted a coup similar to May 27, March 12, September 12, and July 15. This time, the coup came not with tanks or postal ballots, but with a prosecutor’s robe,” he stated.
Özel, mentioning that İmamoğlu’s university diploma was canceled solely to prevent him from becoming President, said, “We thank the Dean and professors of the Faculty of Business Administration, who actually issued the diploma and resisted its cancellation. But when they didn’t cancel it, those authorized to gather the university’s administration and do painting, wall cleaning, and surrounding cleaning, canceled the diploma. We will hold those responsible accountable sooner or later,” he added.
Reacting to the operations, CHP Chairman said, “Some will try to manipulate calculations, claiming my seat is going, and will carry out operations against CHP… Neither Ekrem Başkan nor the Republican People’s Party (CHP) will be left alone. We are Kuva-i Milliye, and we are not afraid of you,” he declared.
30 Detained in CHP Operations
In the fifth wave of operations targeting CHP municipalities, today five district mayors and 47 individuals were targeted with detention warrants, and 30 of them were detained. The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office announced that search, seizure, and detention warrants were issued for 47 individuals under four different investigations.
The investigations include the “corruption” probe into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), the “Aziz İhsan Aktaş error organization” investigation, the “corruption” investigation into Büyükçekmece Municipality, and the investigation into the October 29 expenses of the Beşiktaş Municipality Culture and Social Affairs Directorate. Among those detained are Gaziosmanpaşa Mayor Hakan Bahçetepe, Avcılar Mayor Utku Caner Çaykara, and Büyükçekmece Mayor Hasan Akgün. Additionally, detention warrants were issued for Seyhan and Ceyhan mayors Oya Tekin and Kadir Aydar in Adana. CHP reacted to the operations, claiming that the investigations and detentions are “not legal but political.”
Eleven CHP mayors, including Ekrem İmamoğlu, have been detained since the local elections on March 31, 2024, and six of them have been imprisoned. The number of people targeted with detention warrants in operations against CHP municipalities reached 284 by May 31, 2025.
