Two separate incidents in Russia’s Bryansk and Kursk regions at the Ukrainian border resulted in the collapse of bridges, causing at least seven deaths and dozens of injuries.

The Russian Investigative Committee announced that both incidents occurred due to explosions.

Spokesperson of the Russian Investigative Committee Svetlana Petrenko stated that “these incidents are classified as terrorist actions.”

In the incident that took place in Bryansk region at 22:50 local time, a bridge on the highway collapsed onto the railway track. As a result of the collapsed bridge, a passenger train went off the rails.

Bryansk Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz announced that at least seven people died in the incident, and 71 people, including three children, were injured. Bogomaz noted that one of the three individuals in critical condition is a child. It was also reported that among the deceased was the train’s driver.

Bogomaz stated that 388 passengers were on the train passing through the scene of the incident, traveling from Klimovo in Bryansk region to Moscow, the capital.

The Bryansk Governor announced that the bridge, located approximately 80 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, collapsed due to the explosion. The Moscow Railway also issued a statement after the incident, indicating that the bridge was damaged as a result of “illegal intervention.”

In Kursk region, around 03:00 local time, a railway bridge also collapsed, derailing a freight train. Authorities stated that the train’s driver was injured.

The Kremlin announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed about the incidents throughout the night.

Explosion on Military Train Carrying Fuel to Crimea

In addition to these two incidents within Russian territory, a report indicated an explosion on a freight train in Zaporizhzhia region, which is under Ukrainian occupation.

According to a report by the German news agency dpa, citing Ukrainian intelligence, early Saturday morning, a military freight train carrying fuel to Crimea derailed as a result of an explosion. It was stated that the explosion disrupted a valuable logistical route for the Russian army.

The statement regarding Saturday’s incident came a few hours after Russian officials classified the collapses of the two bridges as “terrorist acts.”

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014.
