On the evening of June 7, Burak Ateş, a dedicated art teacher, experienced a sudden and severe stomach pain while tending to his hobby garden located in Topaktaş Neighborhood, within the Karaisalı district. Recognizing the urgency of his condition, those nearby quickly assisted him, noticing he was bleeding from his abdominal area. His relatives promptly transported him to Çukurova State Hospital for emergency medical attention.
Bullet Wounds Discovered Through X-ray Examination
Medical imaging revealed that Ateş had been struck by a bullet that penetrated the upper left side of his abdomen. Alarmingly, the projectile had migrated to the lower part of his abdomen, necessitating immediate surgical intervention. On June 13, a team of surgeons performed a careful operation to remove the bullet, after which Ateş was stabilized and discharged from the hospital.
Following his discharge, Ateş returned to his residence in the Seyhan district. He recounted that during the Eid al-Adha festivities, he had gathered with his family at the hobby garden in Karaisalı district. He explained that the injury occurred as he attempted to retrieve water from his car trunk and was struck by a stray bullet, likely fired in a reckless manner. Notably, he mentioned that he had just left his son’s side moments before the incident.
Expressing concern for his young son, who is only five years old, Ateş indicated that his child might also have been inadvertently harmed during the chaos. He strongly condemned the prevalence of armed violence, emphasizing the need for stricter control over weapons and firearms.
In a heartfelt plea, Ateş shared his feelings about the disturbing event. He said, “We chose this peaceful area to escape the noise and chaos of the city, hoping for a tranquil holiday. However, violence found its way into our lives once again. We cannot understand why such reckless gunfire occurs, turning festive moments into nightmares. We demand an end to these incidents. Our lives are being overshadowed by fear and pain. Currently, I am living with a bullet still lodged in my body, which is very difficult for me emotionally and physically. This is the first time in our lives that we have experienced such a traumatic event. The pain, compounded by our already difficult circumstances, pushes us further into despair. We’re trying to find peace elsewhere, but if violence persists even in safer places, we don’t know what our future holds.”
Ateş also called for increased security measures and stricter controls on firearms. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness among young people about the dangers of gun violence and the necessity of community involvement in ensuring safety.
The local gendarmerie teams continue their diligent investigation to identify the individual responsible for firing the weapon. Authorities are actively seeking witnesses and reviewing security camera footage to apprehend the suspect, who remains at large.
