The US Supreme Court has given legal backing to one of former President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies by approving the decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for certain undocumented immigrants.
The TPS program allows foreigners unable to return to their home countries due to war, natural disasters, or similar crises to stay legally in the US temporarily. Trump argued that the program was being abused and sought to revoke TPS protections for countries including El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal, and Sudan. This ruling directly impacts about 500,000 people.
The Supreme Court ruled that the federal government has broad authority over immigration policies and may limit TPS on national security grounds. Since 2022, the Biden administration had granted temporary residence and work rights to 532,000 individuals from these countries.
Trump praised the ruling on social media, calling it “a victory for America.”
